Challenges in Teaching Writing by Nerissa Jarvis

There are a few points that could pose a challenge when teaching writing.

1.  Multidimensional nature of writing.

Writing is multifaceted because it involves many different and intricate elements in the process of creating and expressing written language. Writing is more than just putting words on a page; it involves a number of interrelated aspects that enhance the efficacy and richness of written communication.

Three points to consider when faced with multidimensional nature of writing are:

  • Simultaneous co-ordination of a variety of skills, for example grammatical skills, compositional skills and domain knowledge like reading comprehension.
  • Different types of knowledge for particular social and physical writing contexts for example, persuasive, expository, poetry, narrative
  • Many processes required at the same time for example thinking, writing and reading.

2.  Writing as a decontextualized task.

Decontextualized language is characterized by its removal from the present moment. As a result, the writer typically writes about topics that are not currently happening. Because of this, writing becomes challenging because you are unable to see the subject of your writing in the present moment.

3. Absence of prosody, body language, and facial expression in writing.

Body language is a form of nonverbal communication in which information is expressed or conveyed through physical behaviors rather than words. Prosody in speaking refers to intonation, tone, stress, and rhythm. Facial expressions, body posture, gestures, eye movement, touch, and spatial utilization are examples of this type of behavior. Writing lacks these elements that can aid in meaning communication.

4. Writers cannot assume shared context with the reader.

The writer cannot presume that the reader has experienced things in the same way.

5. Writer’s limited information about reader’s knowledge, opinion, and reading competence.

The writer is unaware of the reader's reading proficiency, opinions, and level of knowledge on the subject.

All things considered, the writing process must be broken down step by step by the teacher, who should also offer real-world experiences, encourage students to use concrete language, active verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, provide feedback and have them write for a wide audience.

  1. It is noteworthy that the important points relating to challenges in the teaching of writing were raised. In light of this, I wish to concur with the view that the Teacher, through the writing process has to take the requisite steps to ensure that students are better able to navigate their way through those challenges so that the end product of their writing piece is of a good standard.

  2. Teaching writing indeed presents multifaceted challenges, from coordinating various skills to addressing the absence of prosody and shared context with the reader. Breaking down the writing process step by step, offering real-world experiences, and encouraging the use of concrete language can help students navigate these challenges. Providing feedback and guiding students to write for a wide audience are essential for their growth as writers.
