The Six Traits of Writing - Conventions by Roselle Gordon

As part of the six traits of writing, one of the most important are the use of conventions. but what are they and what does it entail? Convention in writing refer to language rules and guidelines that ensure that the writing is clear and easy to understand. such rules include grammar, punctuation, capitalization and spelling.

An important part to conventions is Grammar. In grammar the focus is on the structure and organization of sentences. It includes using correct verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and proper sentence structure. By following the rules of grammar, writers can make sure that their sentences are clear and make sense.

Another important aspect of conventions is Punctuation. Punctuation marks, such as periods, commas, and question marks, help to give meaning to sentences. By using punctuation correctly, readers know when to pause, separate ideas, and ask questions. This makes their writing more readable and helps readers understand the intended meaning. Punctuation also give a voice to the intended piece and causes readers to emulate feelings.

Capitalization is also an important convention in writing. Capital letters are used to indicate the beginning of a sentence, proper nouns, and titles. By using capitalization correctly, writers show regard to special names and places as well as to indicate the beginning points of sentences.

Spelling can be considered another crucial aspect of conventions. Correct spelling encourages meanings of words not to be misconstrued or misunderstood. By using proper spelling, writers can avoid confusion and ensure that their writing is easy to read and understand. Correctly spelt words also add aesthetics to your writing piece especially when large syllable words are used in their right contexts.

I am convinced that conventions are an important part of writing. By following the rules of grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling, writers can make their work clear, consistent, and easy to understand. By mastering the conventions of writing, students can become effective communicators and convey their ideas with confidence.

To ensure that convention rules are followed in writing, teachers must teach each one individually where necessary and incorporate others together in various language lessons. Encourage spelling across the curriculum and practice using words walls when new words are introduced to increase retention.
