Six Traits of Writing: Organization by Nerissa Jarvis
In the six traits of writing, organization also holds an important role in a writing piece. The structure and arrangement of ideas inside a written piece are referred to as organization. The goal is to make material easy to follow for readers by presenting it logically and coherently.
Imagine if you had a presentation and stayed up all night placing your cue cards in order of the things you wanted to say and just before you are called on stage, they all fall in different directions. Would you feel flustered and disorganized?
In writing a piece if not done with organization, could have a negative impact on the audience. There must be some prewriting, where you can gather your ideas so they can logically flow. If you were to write a story without prewriting, there is a possibility that the story could stray away from the topic at hand. This could run the risk of confusing the audience and find yourself to be labeled as a novice writer. A writing piece must have a beginning, middle and end. These must also connect by transitioning in a logical manner. The audience will appreciate reading a piece that is organized in an order that makes sense.
As a teacher, it is very important to show the students why having organization in their pieces could help them in their writing journey.
Organization in writing is crucial for presenting ideas logically and coherently. Just like a disorganized presentation, a poorly structured piece can confuse the audience. It's essential to teach students the importance of organization in their writing journey.
